Answers
  1. What is a Medicines Check-up?

A Medicines Check-up is your chance to have a private, face-to-face conversation with a pharmacist about your medicines. It makes sure you are getting the best from the medicines that you have been prescribed.

  3. Why should I have a Medicines Check-up?

Recent studies have shown us that half of those taking prescription medicines do not take them properly and could be putting their health at risk without even realising it. The Medicines Check-up will help to ensure that you:

    • Know more about your medicines and what they do
    • Understand the best way to use your medicines
    • Feel confident your medicines are benefiting your health

  5. Are there any signs that would help me know if I need a Medicines Check-up?

There are a number of things that you could look out for. Read through the following and see if they apply to you:

    • You are unsure what your medicines do
    • You don’t know why you are taking your medicines
    • Your sometimes find it difficult to take your medicines, such as problems swallowing tablets or you may find it hard to use a particular inhaler
    • You sometimes forget to take your medicines
    • You don’t feel that your symptoms are under control
    • You are experiencing some side effects which you feel are due to your medicines

While you may recognise some of these signs there are some other things that you may not notice or may be unaware of. For example you may be taking your medicines regularly but not at the correct time of day. So even if you feel you are taking your medicines correctly it may still be useful to speak to our pharmacist.

Answer the Medicines Check-up service ‘Am I at risk?’ questionnaire to see if the service is appropriate for you.

    • You will be able to sit down and discuss your medicines with the pharmacist in a private consultation area

    • The pharmacist will record some details from you and then ask you some questions about your medicines

    • The pharmacist is there to listen, so you will also be given the opportunity to ask any questions and resolve any queries you have about your medicines

    • Together, you and the pharmacist will identify any problems you are experiencing

    • The pharmacist will explain any queries and talk through any changes that you need to make to ensure you are getting the most from your medicines

    • You will be given a copy of the review, including an action plan

    • A copy of the action plan will also be sent to your doctor

  9. I have an annual review with my doctor, so why would I need a Medicines Check-up with the pharmacist?

The review with your pharmacist is in addition to the review with your doctor. Your doctor makes sure that you are prescribed the best possible treatment, and the pharmacist then discusses with you how you use the medicines.
