What is asthma?
Asthma is a common condition that affects the airways - the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. The airways become sensitive and when a person with asthma comes into contact with specific triggers, the muscles around the airways tighten and the airways themselves become very narrow. Sticky mucous or phlegm can also build up which further narrows the airways.
This can cause a number of symptoms including coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Some people experience these symptoms only occasionally, while others experience them frequently.

What is the Asthma Review service?
The Asthma Review service is your chance to assess how well your asthma is controlled. You will be given a simple questionnaire to complete, called the Asthma Control Test. If the result indicates that you could gain better control of your asthma, you will be invited to have a private, face-to-face conversation with a pharmacist about your asthma medicines. This will help to make sure you are getting the best from the medicines that you have been prescribed.

I have an annual asthma review with my doctor, so why would I need an asthma review with the pharmacist?
The review with your pharmacist is in addition to the review with your doctor. Your doctor makes sure that you are prescribed the best possible treatment, and the pharmacist then discusses with you how you use the medicines.
