How common is hair loss among women?

About 25% of women experience hair loss. The most common condition is female pattern hair loss, which is caused by a combination of genetics, hormone levels, and ageing.

What are the causes of hair loss in women?

The most common type of hair loss in women is female pattern hair loss, but there are other types that can be caused by extreme stress, pregnancy, and certain medications. Some conditions and diseases can also result in hair loss.

When can women begin to experience hair loss?

Hair loss is most common in women in their 30s and 40s, but some women can experience hair loss in their 20s. Hair loss often peaks around the menopause.

How can I tell if I have hair loss?

Female pattern hair loss can be identified by a wider parting, more hair with the root attached on your brush, on your pillow, or in the shower drain, and you find it more difficult to style your hair.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you are unsure about whether you are experiencing any of these signs.

How do I know if I’m actually suffering from hair loss?

Hair loss begins gradually and you may only notice it after a few years. Female pattern hair loss results in general hair loss, mainly on the top of the head along the parting.

Can lifestyle changes affect my hair?

Temporary female hair loss can be a result of dietary changes, pregnancy, extreme stress, certain medications, and some medical conditions.

Can sun exposure affect hair loss?

No, the sun will not increase hair loss, but you should still protect your scalp from the sun with a hat or sunscreen.
