What is Arterin®?

Arterin® is a natural food supplement made from Red Yeast Rice that is clinically proven to help you achieve and maintain a healthy blood cholesterol level.

It is new to the UK market and is available exclusively from LloydsPharmacy.

What are the benefits of Arterin®?

If you have raised cholesterol levels, then Arterin® has been clinically proven to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels by up to 22% and total cholesterol by up to 17%, over 8 weeks, without affecting HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

Arterin® can be used an alternative to Plant Sterol/Stanol products or used with Beta Glucan (Betavivo).

How does Arterin® work?

Arterin® contains a natural substance called Monacolin K, which works by preventing the liver from producing cholesterol, which is a similar action to statins. This means that your body has to use cholesterol from your blood stream for things like metabolism and digestion, which results in a reduction in cholesterol.

Each Arterin® tablet contains 10mg of Monacolin K, which is the EFSA* recommended amount needed to help achieve and maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Arterin® can be taken over a long period of time, however, if treatment is stopped, and there have been no major lifestyle changes, then cholesterol is likely to return to pre-Arterin® levels.

Who can take Arterin®?

Arterin® can be used by people who want to effectively manage their cholesterol with a natural active ingredient and who fall into both of these categories:

  • Have raised total cholesterol levels between 5mmol/l and 7.5mmol/l (if your cholesterol levels are greater than 7.5mmol/l, speak to your GP about treatment as this is excessively high)
  • Not already taking lipid-lowering medication prescribed by their GP (if you are already on lipid-lowering medication, then don’t stop or change treatment without speaking to your GP first)

If you start taking Arterin® you should tell your GP that you are using a Red Yeast Rice product.

How should I take Arterin®?

Arterin® should be taken once a day, preferably in the evening with food (avoid grapefruit products, as these can affect the metabolism of Arterin® in the liver).

What are the precautions for Arterin®?
  • It should not to be used by anyone under 18 years of age
  • It should not to be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • It should not to be used with other lipid lowering medicines, including statins (Arterin® will increase the effects of the statin). Do not stop or change your current treatment without speaking to your GP first
  • It should not to be used if you have liver or kidney problems
  • It should not be used if taking anticoagulants as it may increase the risk of bleeding
  • Avoid grapefruit (fruit and juice), as it affects the metabolism of Atertin® by the liver
  • It should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or for a healthy lifestyle
  • Keep out of the reach of children
